We're writing about the life cycle of butterflies. Our class will be receiving their very own pupae and food container to leave on their desks to observe. We are scientists during this time. We observe daily changes, we draw our observations and we question what is happening as we observe.
After giving out all the pupae this afternoon, there were still several left over so I have told the children that if they speak to you at home about it, they may bring in a small enclosed container on Monday to take an extra pupae home with them.

Day 1
ReplyDeleteToday we recieved our pupae. It came in a large container with 2 jars. One jar had many pupae (small caterpillars) and one had food.
This post is by Jillian and Donovan. Today was day 1 and we didn't see the first stage of the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. We got the caterpillar, the caterpillar food and a tissue and cover. We put it on our desks with tape. Jill says the food smells like oatmeal and Donovan says it smell bad. The caterpillar already has some color, black and kinda yellowish orange. Donovan's question is it a boy or a girl? Jillian's question is why is it so tiny?
ReplyDeleteWatching caterpillars change into butterflies is VERY exciting! You will be amazed at how fast the caterpillars grow!
ReplyDeleteJillian's mom wants to know if anyone in 2F knows what the caterpillar food is made out of?
Have FUN! Jillian & Jen
What a great idea to blog about the caterpillars!
ReplyDeleteEric thinks the caterpillar food smells like dog food!
It will be interesting to see how much the pupae changes over the weekend!
Day 4
ReplyDeleteWe missed day 2 and 3 over the weekend, so we noticed lots of things in our caterpillar habitats today. Eric and Caitlin are our bloggers today. Caitlin wants to know if caterpillars have teeth? Eric wants to know what the bristles are made of?
They saw these changes today, Eric saw way less food than there was Friday in the caterpillars habitat and Caitlin saw black dots that we learned was frass. The caterpillars grew a lot over the weekend and athey are about 2cm long. Some caterpillars ate parts of the tissue, some habitats had chewed food on the side of the habitat and some habitats had webs in it. We'll learn more about this later on.
Today we felt, smelled and looked at the caterpillar food and learned that it was made from the mallow plant. The plant has purple flowers and green leaves and can be found easily outside.
This project makes me think of a favorite book in our house "The Very Hungry Caterpillar." Do the caterpillars drink anything or just eat mallow plant? Eliabeth thought it was cool that her caterpillar was starting to grow a silk-like sort of web around it. Can't wait to hear how they change and grow in the next few days....
ReplyDeleteMrs. Bertrand
This morning Michael and I were looking at the catepillar and wondering how old the catepillar is when it turns into a butterfly? Is it the same for all catepillars? Look forward to finding out!

Day # 5
ReplyDeleteToday we have Elizabeth and Michael as our bloggers. Elizabeth says her caterpillar has not moved much since yesterday. Her question is why didn't the caterpillar move? Elizabeth wants to answer her mothers question. Caterpillars do not drink water they get water from inside their food. In nature the caterpillars get water from the leaves they eat.
Michael says a lot of his caterpillar's food is gone and their are tunnels in his food. I think that the caterpillar ate through the food to make tunnels. His question is what do they do while we're not at school? Michael wants to tell his mom that we haven't found out how old a caterpillars is when they turn into a butterfly yet.
Mrs. Chapdelaine says other changes have happened today too. We'll tell you more tomorrow. Check back to find out!
Mr. Chapdelaine says his favorite Caterpillar is the Woolly Bear caterpillar. They look cool and I try not to run over them when they cross the road. My least favorite is the Gypsy Moth caterpillar or "tent caterpillars". They are "eating machines" and they do a lot of damage to our trees! Did you know that if a human baby was born weighing 9 pounds and it grew at the same rate as a caterpillar does, it would weigh 243,000 lbs. when it was fully grown!!! What did the caterpillar do on New Years day?.........He turned over a new leaf!!! (LOL) Mr. Chapdelaine
ReplyDeleteEric came home today and told us that saw the head capsule fall off the caterpillar's head today.. sounds really cool!
ReplyDeleteI never knew that Mr. Chap was such a commedian!
We are looking forward to reading more about the changes in your caterpillars.
Will you be able to post pictures soon?
Funny you ask! That is my next learning lesson. We have got to take some pictures and post them. We have restraints on publishing pictures with kids in them.
ReplyDeleteDay 6
ReplyDeleteToday our bloggers are Katelyn and Jordan. Jordan says today our caterpillars have grown some more. Some of the caterpillars lost there head capsule and most of them ate more food. His question is... when exactly did the head capsule get there? Katelyn says there was a lot more silk on her cup and there is only pieces of frass and two new pieces. The food balls are a lot smaller than they used to be. Her wonder is why the caterpillar ate so much food and there isn't much frass?

ReplyDeleteI was wondering how to get it out of the container.
I just checked on Donovan's caterpillar at home and he's not doing anything today. I think he partied too hard lastnight and he's tired or maybe he's forgotten what it is he needs to do next. I'll keep my eyes on him and let you know if he moves.
ReplyDeleteDeclan's caterpillar is pooped. Plays to much with our dog while he's at school and baseball. We think he/she is ok as far as we can tell.
