Day 13 Kassidy and Wessley are blogging today!

This is Kassidy and Wessley. Kassidy says from day 1 until day 13 ther caterpillars grew and changed. The caterpillars changed into their chrysalises and Mrs. Chapdelaine put them into the flight cage. The picture is of a flight cage with the chrysalises taped to the top of the cage and the bottom of the cage is paper towels. Kassidy's question is why is the chrysalis shaking if the caterpillar already changed into a chrysalis? Wessley says nothing has reallychanged on the outside of the chrysalis but the inside theres probably a change. Wesseleys question is I wonder how long it will take to change into butterflies?
This is a picture of the chrysalises hanging in our flight cage. What do you think?

As you can tell, even though we can't see anything...we know something is happening.

Day12 Mrs. Chapdelaine is blogging today!

Today was a day of reorganization. All but 2 caterpillars changed into a chrysalis and they are now hanging in our flight cage. I hope to take a picture of this and post it for you to see. The children have been doing some great observing and questioning. They have had some very sophisticated questions. Hopefully they will blog about there questions today.

Mrs. Daukantas has questions.

Mrs. Chap told me that the crystallis are just hanging around right now. What is happening inside the crystallis? Are they continuing to eat? How is that happening? How long does the 'thing' stay inside the crystallis? And how does it get out?

Day 11 Taylor and Declan are bloggers of the day

This morning was full of chatter and awe about what they saw in their caterpillar's habitat this morning. Taylor says...there was more frass and silk and less food in her caterpillar's cup. Taylors caterpillar is in a J-shape. A caterpillar in a J-shape hangs from the silk button which is on the tissue or the cups cover. The curled part of the J is the head capsule. Taylor's question is...why do caterpillars make chrysalises? Declan says...there was a chrysalis in the cup. There was more food missing because the caterpillar ate more food. The chrysalis is a harder covering that protects the caterpillar while it is changing to a butterfly inside. Declan's question is ...how long does it take for a caterpillar to turn into a butterfly?

We put together the flight cage and hung the chrysalises to the top of the flight cage with masking tape. Now wait and wonder what is happening inside.

How is your home caterpillar growing?

I just wanted to get an idea of how the caterpillars are growing at home. Are they changing the same way as ours are at school? Please let us know.

Day 8 Sage and Will are bloggers of the Day!

Today is day 8 with our caterpillars. Sage says...There is big holes in the tissue of the caterpillar's habitat. My caterpillar is almost 1 and a half inches long. My question is ...why does my caterpillar eat the tissue? Will says...there was a big hole in the napkin. The silk that was in the cup on day 7 is not there today. Will says...I wonder why the caterpillar eats the napkin?
So as you can see, not much happened today. Most of the kids had the same thing to say about their caterpillars habitat. We hope to see lots of changes when we get back to school on Monday. Don't forget to vote for your favorite butterfly.

Day 7 Abbey and Luke Bloggers of the Day

Day 7 Abbey and Luke Bloggers of the Day
Abbey says...today I observed there were holes in the tissue, there is more more yellow stuff. Abbey's question is...how does the yellow stuff get on the caterpillars tissue? Luke says...today there is more ball which are food balls in the cup, the caterpillar spins some silk in the cup most of the day. Luke question is...why do they spin so many layers of silk in their cup?
Mrs. Chap says we learned about the caterpillars silk, why they spin it and how the caterpillar will use the sild to spin a button. Please ask your child what a silk button is important to the caterpillar?

Butterflies Daily

We're writing about the life cycle of butterflies. Our class will be receiving their very own pupae and food container to leave on their desks to observe. We are scientists during this time. We observe daily changes, we draw our observations and we question what is happening as we observe.

After giving out all the pupae this afternoon, there were still several left over so I have told the children that if they speak to you at home about it, they may bring in a small enclosed container on Monday to take an extra pupae home with them.
